Dr. Funk competed his medical school at the University of Manitoba. He went on to complete a residency in anesthesiology at the U of M as well. As a senior resident he won the Canadian Anesthesiology Society first prize for resident research. He then went on to do a critical care medicine flowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He returned to Manitoba for further training in perioperative Transesopbageal Echocardiography.

He is currently an Assistant Professor in the department of Anesthesia and the section of Critical Care at the University of Manitoba. He is a practicing anesthesiologist and intensivist at the Health Sciences Centre and the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg. His current area of research is in mechanical ventilation and hemodynamic monitoring.

He has worked for Dr Beaulieu at ICCU Imaging since 2008.
